Is it possible to think without language? How does language extend, direct or limit thinking? To me it is hardly possible for almost anyone to imagine thinking without language. I think , it is possible, because so much of our thought is made up of pure emotion. However, I do think that thinking without language would limit our thought to a simplistic, child's way of thinking. Thinking has to have existed before language. Also based in article The Coddling of the American Mind That’s talks about american students in universities who to code to them mind. So abased psychologist like Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist who studies the American culture wars. His thoughts that american students they to much stress and anxiety disorders which cause fear on people. And his saying that most be individual rights education also it need to be safe spaces, to enable everyone have free speech and free academic freedom on campus what they saying. insisted to offended to someone our culture. Also there is a lot of cultural evolution through language.if there is not thinking without language would be pure awareness without the words as an outlet to express. And also people language that we used in everyday life it just symbols attached to objects common with other people. In addition without language I don't think it's possible to be part of a community. language it such limits our thinking and sometimes language did not lot us to express everything . Is it possible to think without language? How does language extend, direct or limit thinking? Do we need protection from words? Also this is the link for article The Coddling of the American Mind www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/09/the-coddling-of-the-american-mind/399356

I feel like language is a most important thing to us, and it is almost impossible to live without a language. Language is the only way that we can share our feelings with others, if language does not exist how do we say that we love somebody or hate somebody? And also without language the world would be more complicate, because it is way harder to understand another person without talking to that person, so how are we supposed to communicate? So language holds a huge part in us, how are we even suppose to say that you are having a cancer, if there is no language, there won't be the word cancer if there is no language. I can't even think of a world without language.

I agree. Language is what allows us to express whatever we need to. I had a discussion about this in one of my cluncooles. Are we able to truly tell something is someway if we didn't have anything to express it? If a chair is blue but we had no way to describe it because of the limit of language, is it truly blue? I've come of the conclusion that the expanding of language is what allows us to extend thinking.

I agree with you that it is possible to think without actually using words to describe and just based on emotions. But that way, it's confusing even for ourselves to clearly understand our thoughts, wants, needs, beliefs, etc. without using proper language. In fact, language is what enhances our thinking and knowledge and helps us share our thoughts more effectively so it is definitely vital in our everyday life.

I agree that language help us to develop our thoughts. However, sometimes I believe that we think without using language. Sometimes, I experience thoughts that cannot be explained with language. I surely think people experience thinking without using language which means they are not talking to themselves in their minds. However, language help us to develop and extend our thoughts. It helps us to understand ourselves in a better way and we are able to express to other people in a proper way. Agreeing with Lucia, language helps us to share thought more effectively therefore, it's definitely vital in our everyday life. Not only humans, but also animals have their own language which they can communicate with others. This is how language is important to all living things in the Earth.

I agree that language allows us to express our thoughts. It is a pretty interesting concept. I think we can think without using language. However, if we didn't have language then there would be communication barriers. Language is vital and it makes human being a unique specie.

I think that it is possible to think without language, as language comes before thinking. There is no point of talking to others if we have nothing to say, right? So thinking comes first, then language. However, I agree that language does promote thinking, as talking to others and discussing our thoughts with others would lead to more critical and deeper thinking. I think that learning more language can facilitate thought and increase intelligence by putting more knowledge and ways to express thought at the speaker's disposal.

Yes, we can think without language because we can use art to express our feelings. You can draw a painting and express all the feelings you have inside your heart. However, we can express our ideas more if there is language. We can study more definition and learn different types of feelings. By learning a language and talking to another person can increase your knowledge about the world. If you do not know how to speak to another person then our knowledge will be limited because we can't share our thoughts.

Yes. I think language and imagination is totally different thing. Language is a method of expressing our ideas or minds. And sometimes, we cannot express our mind because it's too abstract. In other words, imagining and thinking is something different to expressing. I think language is just simple notion of expressing method. Therefore, I think it os possible to think and imagine without any language.

Language is important part of our life. We use language to communicate with others and even we use language to logically organize our thoughts. However, in my opinion, it is possible to think without language because sometimes our emotion can catch up our thoughts. For example, when we are so angry about something, we can not have logical and precise thinkings. Life without language will be very abstractive.

I am completely bilingual, so when I think I sometimes realize I'm thinking in English or sometimes I'm thinking in Korean. It depends on the surrounding, because when people around talk in a which language,I think that way. I subconsciously don't realize what language I'm thinking in though, which is ironic. It's like certainly realizing you have to blink, and it feels very unnatural every time you blink. Anyways I think we think in languages, and it would be almost impossible to think without language unless you're a baby.

When I am thinking to myself, I'm not really aware of the language that I think in. I figure it would be the language that you are most comfortable with. Language is something that can either bring people together or create barriers. I definitely have had struggles with the language barrier in Korea when it comes to getting something done. However the small community created at school brings all English speaker of our ages together which helps us better relate to them. Sometimes in order to hide things, we use our own languages at school and this is what creates the barriers. Even when I am with my English speaking friends I tend to think in my language. I become more secretive. Sometimes this can be a bad thing and even if we are saying bad things about someone else in a language they don't understand it is still offensive to them. So language can definitely be a hindrance.

Mind blowing concept, Haha. But I think language can vary. I don't know what kind of language you are trying to point out here but I think the language we know as it is today, wasn't like this millions of years ago. We used to use sign language back then. If you have a pet then you will understand that sometimes you don't even need sign language to communicate with them. It seems like there is some sort of telepathy and they understand you. So language is a tool to express our feelings and emotion but those things plays stronger role than language here I guess.

No one can think without language because we all have different languages for ourselves. We think differently because we think in our own language. This may be the language itself, such as English, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, or Japanese, it doesn't matter because people think in their language. We have different words to describe certain objects, colour, and moods. If we didn't have language, we would not be able to think or imagine things the way we do. Even if people argue that people who cannot hear or talk and hear, they have their own language so that they can think. Language makes thinking possible in our lives.
