Is there any proof that homeopathic medicine works?
We learn in TOK cluncool a bout if Homeopathy works ( Traditional Medicines & Treatments) It was possible to answer correctly both yes and no to this question. From a scientific point of view, no it doesn't work, from the believer's' point of view, yes it does. This contradiction can easily be explained: Homeopathic medicines are made by diluting to a very high degree, substances which could have an effect in higher concentrations on the workings of the body. Homeopathy is more popular than ever.
WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS? especially Homeopathy Tuitional Medicines used in east Asia and many people prefer to used it.

I think it has to do with how people think about it as well. Like a placebo, if you believe it works better for your body, you might feel the effects better because you believe. Also, especially in places in Asia, tradition is very important, and so people trust the traditions that puncool down those medicine and treatments. I think that it might also work better for people who know what they're doing and what works on their body personally best because it's customized to them.

Yeah, I agree with Julia. When people take a medicine the reaction will take like 30 minutes to an hour. However, some people take the medicine in and they be like "OMG, the medicine worked!" So if you have the effect after 5 minutes that means you got the placebo effect. In China, there is a famous medicine which is the tiger bomb. I do not know the function of the tiger bomb but I believe that ointments have some kind of placebo effect. So it is up to you if you think homeopathic medicine works or not. If you believe it then it works if you don't then it doesn't work.

I agree with Julia. Placebo effect might work really on people when it comes to homeopathy. People feel satisfied when they get medicine to their sickness, thinking that the sickness will get cured and this effect might work on people's mind which might lead the sickness to get cured, because that is how our bodies are made. It is mostly depend on the person, and placebo effect works on them.

From a scientific point of view, homeopathy does work. Chinese medicine cures the unbalance in the body by giving you medicine that does not just cure the disease that surfaced, but your health as a whole. That's why people do not believe that "it works", because it takes longer to see the effects. Which makes sense, if you go on a diet to try to live a healthy lifestyle, do you slim down in a few days, or do you slowly see progress over a period of months. Chinese medicine is complicated and deep, so it is commonly misconstrued to be something unscientific or just a belief. I think this has a lot to do with a difference of cultures. To prove that one type of medicine works, doesn't take away the space of the existence of other types of medicines. There has never been one answer to anything.

I also agree that the placebo effect plays a huge role in whether a medicine will cure the disease or not. If people believe that the medicine will cure them from their sickness, then there will be a chance of being cured even if the medicine was not really effective. I'm not too familiar with the process of homeopathic medicine, but it seems a bit similar to the idea of vaccines? In vaccines, doctors (or researchers) actually put a very tiny amount of the disease within a vial and inject it into a person, and so since there is only such a little amount the person will be able to develop an immunity to that disease and be more stronger against it if it comes around. Since the idea of vaccines is true, perhaps homeopathic medicine works too?

It's like a placebo effect. Scientifically and psychologically it is possible (not always). If our body thinks that the medicine will work, our body will respond respectively. It takes time, but most of the time the effect can be seen just fine. Asian countries used those homeopathic medicine as tradition. Tradition is important in Asian countries, like Julia said, so people believed that those medicine will cure them. And I guess it kind of worked since there are a lot of homeopathic medicine books for different diseases.

I believe that homeopathic medicine works and just normal medicines both work. In certain cultures in East Asia, like China, use homeopathic medicines to treat patients rather than medicines made from chemicals which can cause problems in your body. The placebo effect may play a role but I believe it is just the homeopathic medicine itself that shows great effect on patients. One example is tea. People in China really love drinking tea. They drink tea all the time because first it helps them digest the oily food and it regulates their health. Normal medicines definitely works too but homeopathic medicine also works.

I am an adamant believer in the proof of scientific evidence, and thus am personally against homeopathic medicine. As Julia mentioned, I think the effects of this medicine are due mostly to the placebo effect. The amount of active substance is one solution is so little that any benefits that are supposedly offered with this medicine is a trick of the brain. By believing that the body has the ability to cure itself, the brain manipulates the body into thinking that it is getting better. It is the proof of mind over matter. If homeopathic medicine really was so effective, it would replace our conventional medicine for more serious illnesses. Instead, it is only used for minor conditions and injuries, which is evidence of its lack of potency.

I mean, in many sense, I believe in homeopathic medicine. The essential function of medicine is the placebo effect as Julia said, and our body does the crucial work to cure. Homepathic medicine has been around for thousands of years- if it really didn't work, it would not have gone this long.

Agreeing with Julia, there sure will be some kind of placebo effect by the homeopathy treatment. However, I still believe in some kind of treatments do actually make our bodies better because sometimes the medicine makes our body warm and energetic. They can also take care of some body parts that relate to each other so that they can heal both of the parts. There are tons of treatments around the world and I think they actually are effective their culture because we have different habitat and body structure. I respect the homeopathy treatments around the world because it might not work for other people but the people whose living in that land. If the treatment wasn't working for anyone, why should the treatment still exist now? Even though, I believe in the high qualified medical Science things, I still believe there are some treatments working for us that are not medically proven.

I agree with Grace that homeopathic medicine can also be explained by scientific approach. When a person expects the medication to work, it's possible that the his or her body produces chemical neurotransmitters that can cause effects similar to what a medication might have caused. This not only apply to placebo medicines, but also in daily life. If you truly believe that your life is great and wonderful, you will feel great and wonderful because your body will produce neurotransmitters that trigger happiness. Therefore, I believe, the most powerful medicine is person's positive mindset.

In my personal opinion, homeopathy medicine is very useful and effective medicine. It might sound wierd that people use virus for cure but it can be more effective than normal medicine. Actually, homeopathy is also part of normaledicine I believe. Homeopath method reminds me of fire accident. Fire officers sometimes use "fire" to remove the fire. And sometimes, it is much more influential than water. So i think homeopathy will also be effeicent.

Homeopathy is a huge thing in my country. It's cheaper and easy to get than the general medicines. So a large chunk of people actually choose this as their regular medication rather than going to a hospital. I have some relatives who used these and for most of them it worked. So I think the effect is "Placebo" here. Just simply thinking that I'm getting better can play the trick.

I think homeopathic medicine would work, for a short period of time. While it may be just the placebo effect, if one believes that he/she will get better from the medicine, then it would somewhat help. However, it's better for one to feel like they will get better rather than not feeling that at all. If homeopathic medicine was the only thing I could take, I would instead of just staying where I am if I was sick.
