I think she committed suicide. The world was too hard to live in without directions and guidelines from people she had been counting on for her whole life. I think the likelihood of Gertrude murdering her is pretty low, the motive's too weak. Plus the gravediggers were talking about how her funeral wasn't even suppose to happen since she committed suicide.

I think Ophelia suicided because she seemed to be a character that always relied to others for advice, especially from her father and her bother. Since both of them are gone, she has left with no one to get guidance from. She loves Hamlet, but she got the news that Hamlet went to England for execution, she spoke of what they wanted to her of how corrupted it is. And suicided because that amount of grief she cannot seem to handle.

As others before me have mentioned, I also think Ophelia's death was an act of suicide. It appears to me that Ophelia wasn't able to handle the shock of losing both her father and her lover in such a short period. As a member of the upper cluncool, even though a female, she would have expected to live an easy life in close quarters with the royal family. Hamlet would eventually ask her to marry him, and her father Polonius would walk her down the aisle on her wedding day. However, Hamlet went mad from not being able to contact her (she believes) and Polonius was murdered by her own lover. Ophelia made the decision to drown, for she didn't know how to go on with a normal life after the sudden turn of events.
Meanwhile, I think that Gertrude being the one to retell the tale of Ophelia's death was merely a coincidence of Shakespeare's, not an implication of Gertrude's guilt. Of the remaining characters, Gertrude appears to have the most human feelings, as Claudius only cares about getting rid of Hamlet and Laertes just wants revenge for his father. She showed caring to Ophelia before too, so she had the most friendly connection with the girl.

Some stories telling Ophelia murder by Gertrude and some stories telling Ophelia suicide herself but I think Ophelia suicide herself can be possible because she lose her father and her boyfriend she had no choice. Everybody told her what to do, so she lose these advises too. Without any advises and commands she should be really free but before she getting free she's whole life she has no any freedom so I think Ophelia saw her life as a different way and it's look like crazy to her and she suicide herself.
