If I were to pick a time period with the least development culturally, I would definitely pick the medieval times. In that period, there was barely any improvement in art, music, or performance. As a matter of fact, it seems that they went backwards, for the Romans achieved much more despite being centuries older in history. The reason lies in the church. The church in the medieval times were so strict that people were not allowed to go outside the pond made for them. If they ever did, they would be accused of heresy and be persecuted. In other words, Christianity was used to manipulate the people.
Similarly, we see the tension in Middle East nowadays, with many wars going on and Syrian people finally leaving their homes. A lot of the fault lies in Islam. I am not criticizing the religion itself, I do not know it well enough to talk about it. What I can say, however, is that many Muslims are using Islam as an excuse for their doings, just as the church did back in medieval times. Furthermore, because of that, we can see very little improvement in the Middle East.
Religious bodies are there to make the world better, a warmer, place. But despite the utopian results that are supposed to occur when these bodies are in power, the opposite happens. What do you guys think?

I totally agree with you Jae. The medieval ages was the age where there were numerous battles and fighting for land, glory, and their separate kingdom. It wasn't the age of developing culture. Of course there were advancements of using the tools. They were under strict Christian rule and the top tiered leaders wouldn't want anyone breaking the line and make them look bad. They would just limit everything to be sure that they will keep complete control. Religion can hold a lot of control just like the medieval ages and today in the Middle East. It is a tool that limits the people. Even though it is effective in some sense, for the world to improve the most in history, there should be more freedom of religion in my opinion.

The medieval age was a time of less development ONLY in Europe really. The fall of the Roman Empire and the chaos that h append really did harm to European society, and it would be like that until the Renaissance Era. However in Asia and other parts of the world, the "Middle Ages" was an era of prosperity. Since European countries are the "victors" right now and they "write history", the Middle Ages in Europe is emphasized a lot. However in terms of the human race as a whole, I cannot find an era of little improvement, even though some parts of the world might suffer some least improvement. But the other parts of the world will cover for that.

First of all, before I start the discussion, I am a Christian who goes to church every Sundays. Now, from the history, Middle East regions first belong to Hebrews and because of hardship, they left the land unoccupied and went to Egypt and became their slaves. Later, Moses brought them out of Egypt and led them back to the promised land, Canaan. Jesus Christ was born in Jerusalem. But we have to understand that it is not only a special place for Christianity but also an important place for Muslim as well. Mecca the holy place for Muslim also located in that area. Muslims also consider the area as a sacred place in their religion. Starting from the Medieval time, both religion fought to posses the area for their religion. Finally, after world war 2, the secret meeting between the Jewish and Great Britain, declare the land to be own by Israel. The war broke out between Israel and the Arab countries around the Israel. So far, Israel aided by Western countries have won most of the wars. People still consider what is happening in that region as a war between the two religions. Some of us see it as a war to survive and protect the land once they own.

I agree with you. The medieval ages was a period with the least development. During medieval time, medieval men and women were born members of the church and were expected to worship regularly in their own church unless they were traveling. The religion was so strict that people were not allowed to go outside. If they did, they would be accused of heresy. In the 1380s, several challenges emerged to the traditional teachings of the Church resulting from the teachings of John Wycliffe. He argued that scripture was the best guide to understanding God's intentions and criticized the role of senior churchmen in government because he believed the Church distracted from that study.

Last I checked, development of society grows exponentially over time, so I'll just state the obvious answer of the prehistoric times (stone age). People were busy in finding a way to not get killed by predators, weather, and natural disasters and finding food to stay alive, so there was little reason to develop culture on purpose. All they had were simple tools for many years.

Religion is the best excuse to make up for what a person is doing. People turn to religion when they are desperate and simply by the fact that they have something to believe in. In the medieval ages, people abused religion to gain what they want. Religion was very strict, so it was easy for people to use religion to their advantage. It is not so different nowadays too. People still use religion to their advantage. Yet, I hear a lot in media that people think a certain religion is bad. I'd say that we should not criticize religion. Most religion do not have 'laws' that are immoral. It is the people who use religion to their advantage to be criticized.
