Why people believe weird things Michael Shermer: Michael Brant Shermer is an American science writer, historian of science, founder of The Skeptics Society, and Editor in Chief of its magazine Skeptic, which is largely devoted to investigating pseudoscientific and supernatural claims. Why do people see the Virgin Mary on a cheese sandwich or hear demonic lyrics in "Stairway to Heaven"? Using video and music, skeptic Michael Shermer shows how we convince ourselves to believe — and overlook the facts. why people still they believed weird stuff , even they know it is wrong. what do you think guys about video? www.ted.com/talks/michael_shermer_on_believing_strange_things?language=en

I think people might believe in certain things because of fear. People believe in superstitions because they are afraid something bad might happen if they do a certain action. Also, it might be the fear of the unknown in particular, or the fear that what theyre hoping for won't become true unless they really believe in it. They say you only see what you want to see, so it could be that as well.

I agree with Julia, where superstitious people believe in superstitions due to their fears and also cultures. For an example in my country people believe that seeing a black cat is an omen, but it is not really in other countries. In the past, probably something bad happened when a person sees a black cat, so that came up from generation to generation, and people still believe it.

Because people fear what they don't know. They don't know what's that noise in the distance or why bad luck is a thing, so they try to pin the cause on whatever it is. It's the same way people believe in witches, they're afraid of an effect without a cause. So by that point people will more easily find these effects as a result of that fear, and try to find what causes it.

People believe in certain things because they have had experience with those things. They might lose control and start investing thoughts about unreal things when their fears or conflicts are left unresolved. If they dont recognize what's causing them to believe in such thing, they may become even more insensitive and careless to the point of deceiving themselves in everyday life.

Belief of something is very similar to drug. Everyone know that drug is bad but they still take it because they can not life without it. People feel fear to know the truth about their belief and life without their belief although they even know their belief is wrong. Their fear is much stronger regardless of truth or false. People believe weird stuff because they are addicted to their belief.

In my opinion, people tend to believe in certain things due to fear. As Julia mentioned, people believe in superstitions because they are afraid of bad consequences. For example, in Korea, if people write their name in red, they think it is going to harm their lives. Thusly, people do not write their name in red. They are just simply following or believing the fact to avoid bad consequences and omens.

I kinda agree with others here. Maybe the fear of unknown plays a role here. The weird things also can b created by the media sometimes, as we saw in the movie in our cluncool. So it's all about fear and manipulation and the people that wants us to believe in those ideas and we are kinda forced to believe those.

Yeah, people do believe in other things because of fear. As Julia said, superstitions makes people afraid of the consequence. In asian countries, there is a saying that if you turn on the fan on at night you might die during your sleep. So I always turned off my fan before going to sleep because I was scared that I might fear. Fear played a role in my life to make me do things that make me turn off the fan during my sleep.

I think people believe something weird because they don't what will happen to them and fear. I think I will not believe anything weird things, when I know my futures. I sometime check daily lucky things because I don't know what will happen to me and want to know how my day will be like. Some people told me it is stupid to check those things, but sometimes it is correct. It might be just my own feelings or thoughts, but due to unclear future, I like to check and prevent myself from the bad things. It could be part of my fear that I don't want to put myself into the trouble.

I think that when you believe in something, you feel more safe and comfortable. People fears the unknown and because of that we need something to rely on which can be something like religion or some kind of superstition.

Why do people believe in weird things? Isn't that manipulation? People can easily manipulate people using their fear, especially the fear of unknown because if they don't know about that thing, they will easily think that thing as "bad" thing and be scared of it, they will try to avoid that thing as far as they can so they believe what the manipulator say.
