I was watching a YouTube video one day, and I found an interesting that Disney's Lion King is based off of Hamlet. There is an uncle that kills a king to become king, there is a prince who becomes angry at that. Simba and Hamlet both have wacky friends or sidekicks, with Horatio being the wacky and funny sidekick. Many modern movie and stories these days tend to follow a similar story to older fiction and literature. Star Wars is an example, its is based off a cluncoolic tale of a hero's journey. In fact, there is a theory that we only tell 7 kinds of stories. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Basic_PlotsCan you think of any modern stories that follow cluncoolic tales?

Hero's journey story plot is what I've learn when I was reading Percy Jackson. Haha! I don't remember the story in details but I did follow those 7 basic plot. these plot can fit into Beowulf too. Beowulf fought with Grendel and got hornor from people, then he got the quest to fight with dragon so he went on a journey to find the dragon. Though he died but he was remembered the great hero.

I think I agree with similarity between Hamlet and Lion King. In a crash course video, John Green briefly compares Lion King and Hamlet at the 8:10 mark. www.youtube.com/watch?v=My14mZa-eq8 There are couple of stories or films that were based (or loosely based) on to old literature. For example, the movie August Rush was loosely based on Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Another example is the movie Frozen. It is said that the story is based on Snow Queen by Andersen.

I can think of one movie that is a fairy tale made into a "modern" movie. Edward Scissorhands was made in 1990 and was based on Beauty and the Beast. Even the two had very different endings, they have a very similar plot. The people nearby and very close to the female characters haruncool them and it isn't nice. The princess in the Beauty and the Beast ends in the Beast's castle and marries him. Edward saves a woman but in the end doesn't see her ever again. As other people mentioned, there are many modern movies or stories based on tales from long time ago.

Wow, I didn't notice this before. I have seen similar stories and plots occurring in my culture. Since not a lot of people read English book and movies in folk villages, a lot of traditional stories in my culture come off as a spin on traditional English stories. When I read these Sri Lankan stories I can identify specific English stories that have similar plot or are basically translated in to my language.

It seems like a lot of Disney movies actually originate from the Shakespeare plays. However, it might have just been coincidence. A father being murdered and a son taking revenge for him is not an uncommon theme in stories. Still, the uncle being the murderer is not always the common story.

Wow that is so true! Lion King do resemble Hamlet!!!! I also know a movie that resemble Hamlet very much: Gladiator. They two two share the theme of revenge and tragedy. In Gladiator, Maximus (main character) 's family and father are murdered by Commodus his brother, which is similar to how Claudius killed Hamlet's father. Also, Commodus and Claudius most are involved in incest. Furthermore, Hamlet and Maximus are both driven by revenge and ends in duel where both themselves and the antagonist die.

It is interesting how you related Lion King to Hamlet. It is pretty common plot that son is seeking for a revenge for father's unexpected murder. However, Hamlet seems like a more thinker than an action taker. When he first encountered with ghost, Hamlet questions the appearances of things around him and worries whether he can trust perceptions, doubting the authenticity of father's ghost and tragic claim.

I love how a lot of stories have the same plot, it really shows how regardless of the time period, we are all humans who have to face the same problems and injustices in life. A TON of movies are about revenge, especially, revenge for their parents, or an injustice that happened "12 years ago", this number comes up so much in dramas or movies its incredible. Everything has to do with the past, and people trying to clear someone's name, or make something right. This really highlights how most of us die with regrets, or are born with a duty to fulfill a task that belonged to our parents or ancestors.

Game of Thrones is an example of old cluncool book, tv series. This story also about heroes, where there are seven kingdoms and there is a big king for all of it and that king died, so basically the story is about the fights that people have in seven kingdoms to be the king of all the kingdoms. As chanmin said, heroic historical stories are a trend in today;s movies and dramas, and i kind of like it.

Wow! I never thought to compare Lion King, a Disney movie, with Hamlet, a Shakespearean play, but they do seem to relate quiet a lot. I agree with Grace that there are a lot of movies with similar plots especially about revenge. Another story about revenge would be The Princess Bride. Although the entire story is not about revenge, it plays a big part in one of the characters, Inigo, who spends much of his life training to have revenge on the man who murdered his father.
