She was the symbol of pure, innocent, and beauty. I wonder even though she committed suicide, she goes to hell or heaven. She was pure and innocent when she was lived. The part where Priest described she goes to hell, but Laertes believes that she will go to heaven. This scene made me think about is she go to hell or heaven?
I think she will go to heaven because she was pure and innocent figure when she was lived. I think God will mercy her suicide because she had deep pain inside of her. Also, her death scene was beautiful and not bloody like others. I think because others' are committed sin, but she doesn't made any sin like other. Therefore, I think the death scene was different from others.
What you think?

Oh, interesting idea! I didn't think about her death being clean (not bloody) compared to other characters! You're right! Well, I hope God looks at the reasons of why people committed suicide before sending them straight to hell. Ophelia was the most tragic character in the play I think. I agree that she had no sin! It was just too much to handle for a young woman, a difficult breakup, her lover insulting her and breaking her heart even more, then the absurd murder of her father...it all happened too fast all at once. I think she went to heaven, because her heart was never unkind, and instead of hurting people she was frustrated about, she only killed herself,

I agree, with you she was the symbol of pure and innocent, and beauty. But than Ophelia's Death depend on religion, if she go to heaven or hell. In Christians also believe that, after death, all humans will be judged by God according to their actions on this earth. Because of the religious turmoil which had taken place in England just before and during Shakespeare's lifetime, beliefs would differ about what might happen after God's judgement. I also belives that Ophelias go to heaven becasue she got crazy becasue of his fater death. I beleives she was not suicide, but than what she did unware .

I kind of dont agree with you. In the monologue of Ophelia, where she sang that she is not a virgin, made me think that she might not goto heaven. Since she was not married to Hamlet, and since she was only dating him, but still she lost her virginity made me think as for Catholicism that she did a sin. So she might goto hell.

Well, according to Christine doctrine, suicide is a serious sin (a level 6 sin according to Dante's Inferno). Therefore, it is more likely that Ophelia would end up in hell than in heaven. However, I agree with you that Ophelia really didn't do anything wrong. She was more of a victim. Her lover, Hamlet, turned crazy and his father was murdered by Hamlet. That is more than enough to make her go crazy.

Interesting... Well she committed suicide, which is a terrible sin in Christianity. Yet, her death really wasn't her fault. Madness drove her to suicide and that madness was caused by others. So maybe she will go to heaven. Also, it's interesting that her death scene was clean and not bloody. I guess this can symbolize that Ophelia died pure (Even though, as Tharu said, Ophelia said that she was no longer a virgin in her monologue, which raises the question did Ophelia stayed innocent upon her death).

I don't think Ophelia really committed suicide. She fell into the river on accident when the branch she was on broke, so that would not be suicide. Also, I don't think she realized that her clothes would pull her down into the river since she had floated for quite a bit, so maybe she just didn't realize that she would drown and just thought she would keep going down the river until somebody found her.

I believe this answer is depends on how you think about Ophelia and her death. William Shakespeare did not specifically depict her death. This is because he left several options about her truth to audiences. She will go to heaven if she is truly mad or she will go to hell if she is not mad. Personally, I believe she will go to heaven because she suffered enough for society ruled by men.

I agree that for most of her life, Ophelia was a pure and innocent maiden. However, slight hints in the story made me think that she isn't the ideal woman that we thought her out to be, so I believe she'll go to hell. She sings about going into a room as a virgin and coming out a non-virgin, and since her songs appeared to parallel her life, that would mean she also wasn't a virgin. This would be a sin in her religion, for she had sexual relations before marriage. Also, her suicide may be due to her madness, but it was a suicide nonetheless, and suicide is also intolerable in the Christian religion. Others above me have mentioned that she fell in, not drowned herself, but she floated on the water for a period of time before she drowned. This meant that she deliberately waited for the water to weigh down her clothes, and she never fought to get out of the water.

I think Ophelia went to Hell because in the story, it is repeated that if you kill yourself you will go to Hell which is why they don't kill themselves. Also, like Annie mentioned, it is hinted subtly in the play that Ophelia might not have been a virgin. Because that would mean that she disobeyed her family's wishes for her to stay chaste, this would also be a bad thing to do. Because of this she might Hell.

Interesting thought. It is true that Ophelia's death scene was clean rather than bloody. There are many consequences or causes that made her ending up with "suicide". It is a trouble action in Christianity; however, her death might be viewed in a different perspective. In my opinion, Ophelia did not have enough strong state of mind because other people's madness led to her action (suicide).

I also agree with you. Since ophelia is an icon of pure and kind person in the Hamlet story, she probably went to heaven after she died. Although ophelia did some wrong thing in her life time, everyone made a mistake in life time so it does not make sense that human never make the mistake, thus I believe ophelia went to heaven. In my personal opinion perspective of ophelia, she was really kind and pure and always thinking others and selfishless woman.

Ophelia's life was so tragic that it would be depressing if she goes to hell too. But it is true that suicide was, and is, considered a crime. I hope she went to heaven, her life was hell already. I don't think her death was necessarily beautiful. It was just very tragic. I think it's just the way Gertrude described it that was beautiful.

Ophelia's death was surprising to me. The first thing that I started realizing was that she had gained freedom through her father's death and Hamlet leaving her life. She does not have to be under the control of a man and take orders from men. I couldn't understand why she didn't appreciate this freedom and in the last minute, kill herself. Im not sure if her suicide was justified for her to go to heaven but there were not much sins she had committed for her to go to hell.

I dont agree with Topher, because it was her decision to kill herself. She got her freedom from her father and brother and Hamlet, so all of her life decisions were upto her. And the first decision she made was killing herself, which is like a wort sin in Christianity. So she would probably goto hell.
