We talk a lot about Ophelia this week.
So what do you think. Who should take the blame for Ophelia's death? Hamlet? Polonius? Herself? And did she deserve all the crap she got from everyone around her? I feel bad for Ophelia because she the only person who sacrifice and lose everything in here life. I believe in end Ophelia suicide herself because she was not insane, what she is doing?

Ophelia's death is really unknown. We're given information through Gertrude that she killed herself in her madness. To be honest, I feel like the blame should be on Hamlet. Hamlet's rejection started it and his madness led to the death of Polonius. Ophelia really had nothing to do with these events but was just caught up in the action. To me, she felt more of a victim and had no other choice but to end it all.

There's no other character to be responsible for Ophelia's death except Hamlet. Hamlet rejected Ophelia and it is evident in act 3 scene 1. Hamlet was also the one who killed Polonius. Ophelia had no wrong and didn't deserve anything that happened in the play. It's very tragic.

As Jonah said, Ophelia's death is unknown. The author didn't explain much about her death, except for just popping up her sudden death while Laertes and Claudius was planning Hamlet's death. I feel like this part is kind of misogynist, because as we talked in the cluncool, we said that Ophelia got her freedom from both Polonius and Laertes and the next thing that she did was suicide, which can convince the author to think that women are sinners. Since Hamlet was considering to suicide but due to the religion he couldn't but unfortunately Ophelia did. So this might a way of showing the comparison of Men and Women.

Yeah, I agree with you guys. Hamlet really caused Ophelia's death because Hamlet rejected her. Hamlet was saying bad things to Ophelia and was hurting Ophelia's feelings. Ophelia believed in Hamlet and loved him but he was saying harsh words and left her heart broken. She was going through a lot of stress which caused her death.

Ophelia seems a character that really relies on others for advice, when her father died. She just basically lost it and let all her feelings out to at least get people's senses, which I believe Hamlet should have been there for her since both characters have lost their fathers and at least feel sympathetic. Ophelia probably realized by the end that Hamlet didn't really care, and that he is insane, even though she loved him. Making her to lost of what to do, and committing suicide is a one way ticket from madness.

I personally think Ophelia was just dumb. Why would you kill yourself after getting rejected? Yea they originally had a good relationship but she should have waited some time and confess Hamlet again or confess another man other than Hamlet.

As I said in cluncool, I don't think Ophelia had any other choices. Ophelia was dependant on men her entire life, her father, brother, and Hamlet. And with her father's death and Hamlet's rejection, everything she depended on was gone. She had to immediately learn to think by herself, which she never had to do because she only idd what others told her to do. So in the process of losing everything she depended on, she became insane and with this insanity she got, she could use it as an excuse to speak up her for her mind for the first time. In her monologue, Ophelia criticises the authority and corrupted society but no one takes her seriously because as a young woman, she is only objectified. Even after all the important criticisms she said (for example, criticising Claudius and Gertrude for adultery), only response she really gets is "O, pretty Ophelia." She has learned to think for herself in tragedy and she spoke for herself, but no one listened and no one will. I think that's why she had no choice but to kill herself, she had no reason to live.

I think there was only negativity in her life. The depressions and sadness gave her choice to committed a suicide. There was no one around her and everyone expressed their madness to her. Who might survive in that situation? I think the death was only choice that she could do. There was nothing she could do because she was tired of her life and she might felt there was no one for her. Her father was dead and brother was far away. There was no one who can tell her what to do or give her guide lines.

I think that everyone should take part of the blame for her death. including herself. Polonius and Claudius would be blamed because they kept using to test whether Hamlet was sane or not, and Polonius and Laertes kept giving her orders on how she should act because she was a woman and they were men and therefore needed to help her, a weakling, out. Even though their intentions were not bad, it sort of came out that way. Also, Hamlet is to blame because he used her as bait to make the others think he was mad, as he acted all crazy towards her and yelled at her and stuff. She was especially heartbroken after that, so played a role in her madness and eventually her death.

I think that Ophelia should not be blamed for her death, as there were many parts of her life which lead her to go crazy which were not her fault. One especially important part was how Laertes and Polonius treated her. Back in the day, women were seen as very lowly and unequal to men, and so delicate and fragile that they were unable to make their own decisions. Because of this belief, the men in Ophelia's family always give her advice and control how he behaves, and because Ophelia grew up in this kind of life she was soon used to it and followed their advice against her love for Hamlet. Even though she spent her whole life like this, there must have been some part which made her sick of such a life. Hamlet also played a role, acting all crazy towards her and breaking her heart. So she did not really have a blame sen her death, other people played a larger role.

Every should be blamed for Ophelia death. Ophelia herself was not brave enough to embrace her freedom and did not have a strong heart to endure her hardship. Hamlet not only killed Ophelia's father, but also insulted her. As for Polonius, he shouldn't have taken the risk to be involved in Hamlet's madness if he cared for security of his family.
