I forgot how the quote went (or who said it really), but apparently people die twice. Once when they physically die, and then the next happens when people forget about them (or the last time people say their name or something). So by this logic, how do you become immortal? As in, how do you make enough of an impact in the world so you'd be remembered generations to come? We sort of see this with King Hamlet, where Hamlet Jr. kept him in his mind at all times (he still wore mourning clothes months after the death), to the point of seeking revenge. Hamlet's opinion on his father was very high (which meant he was a good king in Jr's eyes), so chances are if he'd survive, he'll always remember his father as long as he lived. But since he died, King Hamlet's legacy won't last very long. And Fortinbras honored Hamlet Jr. at the end too, but it's arguable whether he was sincere or not. Of course, the author of this story is more remembered than any of his characters, so I might be looking at this wrong. There's more than one way to make an impact in the world.
What do you guys think?

I think to be remembered "forever", you need to have created or accomplished something humans can't live without, or can all relate to. Artists are a good example. Why do we listen to cluncoolical music that's 500 years old, go to museums to look at paintings from a long time ago, or read novels that are super old...because we're all human, we can relate to their ideas, their feelings. This is kind of like, can you understand a character from a different time period, yes because we have the same human nature, we get why they did what they did. Even leaders, inventors, people who started revolutions...society can never be "fixed", we still need people like them in our world today, that's why we remember them.

Wow thats so cool that people die twice. I honestly think that it is impossible for humans to become immortal because that basically means that they are alive physically forever isnt it? please correct me if im wrong haha. Anyways, if people are to become immortal, I think that its important for that individual to leave a great impact while they are physically alive. As Grace talked about artists, i also think that musicians? pop king? i dunno. Michael Jackson is a good example where he's puncooled away however his music is still remembered and loved. So I think that its important how they are viewed before they die.

It's impossible for humans to become immortal physically. Yet, we can become immortal in history. Our names can be remembered, legacy can be sent down. It is interesting how it is put that people die twice. And making an impact in the world... there's lots of ways. Through your job, actions, thoughts, and speech, etc. Anything that can be take to bring change, i think that is making an impact in the world, or on someone's world.

On a individual level, nothing matters once you die, thus immortality is a delusion. But if you want to be looking at your life from a collectivistic point of view, you die once people start mentioning your name. Personally, I don't think posthumous fame is a good reason to try an make an impact in the world, and the Hamlet analogy really isn't a good example of the immortality that we are speaking of now.

I think dying first time is when people lose their purpose to live. This happens in a lot of stories, where a hero falls in despair and they have "no more will to live". Dying second time is well, literally dying.
However the human instinct always give people some purpose to live. Even if you have no special skill you want or some special goal, you still would want to eat 3 times a day and survive. So I don't think you're necessary "dead" when you lose sight of a big goal. However one might go suicidal if they lose all purpose for real, and I think that is really dying twice. Except the intervals between them will be really short.

I think this is the quote you heard. "They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, when somebody says your name for the last time." -Banksy I think being forgotten is as scary is dying. Some people are scared of dying, some are scared of being forgotten. I used to be like that, around middle school i think. I had this extreme fear of getting forgotten so I wrote bunch of journals and ideas, and I thought of ways I could be remembered even after I died. I'm not like that anymore but I really understand what Banksy was talking about.

I totally agree with the quote! People die once when they die physically and they die the second time when they are forgotten. However, there are people who die only once. Those are people who are remembered forever in history. Although physical immortality may be impossible to be reached, people can become immortal through literature or history. For example, Gilgamesh is long dead physically, but many people still know about him because his legend is still being told and read.

For most humans, people probably would die twice because not many of us are important enough to make a large enough impact in the world. Though it is a sad fact, it is reality, which can be depressing because people ask what is the point of living if we are going to die anyways, both physically and metaphorically. Little children always say, "I want to change the world" or "I want to become the president" just so that they can become important in history, but there is little chance of that happening anyways.

Death can be a scary concept for people. At one time or another, we are all afraid of one day dying and people forgetting about us in just a short time. So there are many people who try to do outstanding things so that they can stand out in history and not be forgotten. But it is safe to say that being remembered is not as hard as people believe. Our society is changing day by day, and there are ideas and inventions that can make a lasting impact on our lives. For example, who knew that Bill Gates, a college dropout, would one day found Microsoft? This is just once example of how an ordinary person like ourselves can do extraordinary things and become extraordinary people.

This theory is interesting! I think it does make sense that we die twice, for the first death described is a physical death, while the second death is a mental/psychological death. Thus, to become immortal would be to always be remembered. Examples of such figures who have achieved this immortality would be Plato, Aristotle, Alexander the Great, Marco Polo, Aristotle, and many others. By being written into history in the form of books and internet searches, they have ensured the immortality of their legacies. Books may have a limited lifespan, but the internet will last forever, no matter what form it may be in the future. Anything that ever gets uploaded onto the internet never disappears, even if one may actively try to delete it. We ourselves have ensured our own immortality with our presence on social media, for those Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram accounts will last forever.

We all know who Martin Luther King is, or we all know who Adolf Hitler was. We all remember people that have made a significant difference to the world. We all have people in our mind who we want to be like, respect, or remember. We become immortal through making an impact on the world, which is probably the basic theory of life. There is a saying that reminds us of why we exist. We exist to become someone, become someone who can impact the world and make it a better place. One of my favourite street artist Banksy, said this, "I mean, they say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit alter on, when somebody says your name for the last time." I really agree with this quote and all of you guys because I really do think we die twice. I agree because we all learn to let go of our losses and when we let go of our loss, that means that person or thing would be gone from your head, your thoughts, and your mind, you won't be thinking about them anymore.

I also think it's true that people die twice, both physically and when they are forgotten by others. Most of us want to have a positive impact on the world but not for the right or accurate reasons. Some people want to leave a legacy because it sounds cool. Some even think that it's useless and those who try are just wanting to impress others and wasting their time when they can just enjoy life. I forgot who said it but the quote went "The unexamined life isn’t worth living". I agree with this in that to live a purposeful and fulfilling life, it's important to think about what we can build and contribute.

Interesting thought. I agree that we as human beings die twice: physically and psychologically. However, there are some figures who are immortal. I would say one typical human being is immortal is Shakespeare. No matter what era humans are living, I think we always learn and read about Shakespearean stories. I believe we all do read some other stories such as Hemingway because we all share similar themes. For example, in Hamlet, the major themes were misogyny, corruption, impossibility of certainty, and etc. Today, we all share those themes in society. There is always corruption and uncertainty in real life. As long as literature, music, and others share similarities, it will be immortal and always be remembered.

That's an interesting idea! I think that the only way to be immortal is when you're remembered by people. We learned about this in grade 9 actually when we were reading Gilgamesh! If you are remembered by people, you are immortal as long as they remember you. But because no one can be remembered forever, no one can be immortal forever.
