I think Federigo will still buy an expensive gift for Monna despite his terrible financial situation. Although the ending of the story hints that he is getting better at managing his money, I don't think he will rid his materialistic ideals so fast. I think he will sell whatever he has to buy her a diamond ring. On the other hand, I think Mona will get Federigo something more meaningful and considerate because she value heartiness over materialism. Some possible examples would be a poem expressing her feeling or handmade goods such as knitted scarf.
