These are just some of my thoughts.
There's something bigger going on. I believe this story is meant to make us reflect upon what society has done to innocent people. The reactions we’re having, like “why is he so dumb”, “what does he think he’s doing”, or “he’s just making it worst”… is exactly what the author is criticizing, We’ve all become just like the people Don Quixote meets on his journeys who laugh at him. We make up the society we blame by allowing it to continue to exist in the way it does. And then we turn around and laugh at people like Don Quixote who are so innocent that they don’t even realize how evil people can be, and call them dumb, when they are really the ones we should be learning from. Or the ones who we could have been, if not for society getting to us first. Don Quixote reminds us of our purest selves. The fact that we say “he’s being so unrealistic or unhelpful” is because we’ve stopped believing that people could be good by nature. When Don Quixote met the farmer beating the boy, he believed that the farmer would keep his words, that’s why he was so sure that he had done something good when he left. That’s how much he believed in the farmer! Who does that anymore? Nobody trusts anyone?! People lie to each other’s faces without blinking an eye, like the farmer who said he would stop beating the boy but began again as soon as Don Quixote left, or the Innkeeper who lied about having a glorious past to try to get Don Quixote’s money. Look at how evil these people are, and in contrast, how innocent Don Quixote is for being so completely oblivious and even satisfied at his courageous ways as a knight.
I think so far, the metaphor is huge. And it’s so well hidden that to me, people end up hating the wrong characters. It's so great, but also so sad to read.
What are your thoughts on Don Quixote? What do you like or not like, understand or not get...anything, what do you think?
