I think it was popular because that's what happened to a lot of people back then. Circumstances always got in the way of love, family, position, money...etc, and stories about unattainable love could echo their feelings. Especially women, since many married to bring peace between countries, their marriage did not even include love.
Why do people still like it now? Even though that situation may happen less now, the fact that there will always be unattainable things in life, makes people like a good story about it. Also, I think some people purposely feel miserable to get better. That's why we add drama to our lives, read or watch things that may have sad endings.
Why do you think unattainable love is such a popular theme in stories? Do you like stories with unattainable love in them?

I also think unattainable love would have happened more then. Adding to your list of why, also because divorces weren't allowed. I'm very glad it exists os much less now because having unattainedable love would be one of the worst things ever. I personally don't like stories with unattainable love in them. I think unattainable love is used in stories to make them dramatic. Unattainable love, revenge, incest, and adultery are common elements of the most dramatic stories. I don't like those stories just for personal reason that I don't like dramatic stories. Nonetheless, there are many people who like dramatic stories so I think that's why unattainable love is a popular theme. Also, I think the theme was especially popular then because I feel like people loved dramatic stuff more then. If you look at old stories such as Beowulf, Sir Gawain, and even to Shakespeare's, you can easily tell that people loved dramatic stuff.

"Unattainable love" means love that cannot be real, right? I think everyone no matter what time period had at least one unattainable love, such as having a crush on someone you know who isn't for you. Everyone has it, so people can relate to it better.

I think unattainable love is a common theme because there people love to write tragic stories about love in general. Shakespeare is just one famous writer who wrote about unattainable love and tragedies, and his stories always had endings with death or some kind of tragedy. Also, back then arranged marriages were very common so people could not marry the ones they loved, and instead were forced to marry people they had never met before. So many people can related to unattainable love.

In my personal opinion, people tend to like a story which focused in unattainable love because they feel connection with the story. What I meant is that people might all have their personal experience related to unattainable love because it is impossible thatall the person who you like will love you back. And the story line is pretry mysterious and unsolveable so it usually has interesting story line. This is why unattainable story is so popular in literature.

I think that unattainable love is a popular theme in stories for people because it adds a level of foreboding which makes it look a little more interesting than if everything is smooth sailing. It's like how a quest is only really fun to read about if there's danger. If we had known that the Green Knight would spare Sir Gawain from death, then Sir Gawain and the Green Knight would be less fun, because the danger is taken away.

I always like to think about stuffs in a twisted manner because simplicity is boring. I would apply the same reason to explain why unattainable love was popular. We tend to look for adventure in every single moment of our life. We also believe that nothing is impossible. So after mixing up these two ideas we get attracted to whats forbidden or not right for us but we still try. Because we have that slight hope that this can bring us out from the general structure of our life. So that's why we can still see this trend around us.

I personally like unattainable love stories because as you read more, more interesting things happen throughout the story. One bad thing is that sometimes it's.. too 느끼해 you know? Anyways, the reason unattainable loves in stories are so popular is because if you write a guy loving a normal girl, it would be too boring. However, if you write a poor handsome guy suddenly saw a beautiful wonderful awesome king's daughter and fell love, it would be way more interesting. Example of this story would be like Titanic.

I just think that unattainable love stories make readers to engage more. People have desires to be stimulated by something. Unattainable love stories provide those stimulation because of the way stories are written. A man and woman falls in love where society doesn't want them to be loved and conflicts, turning points, and crazy events happen around the lovers. This provide stimulation of fun and excitement, giving readers to be engaged.

I think the main reason that unattainable love stories are famous because that anybody could relate it to themselves. As chanmin said unattainable means that you cannot have it, so for an example a crush you have towards a celebrity could also an unattainable love, so you can connect the other stories to yourself. Most of the people probably have at least one unattainable love, for me i have like a lot, so these stories get famous because of that, because everybody can connect to themselves.

It seems true that people always want something that is unattainable. For example, in the F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the reader is introduced to the disillusionment of the American Dream in the 1920s and Jay Gatsby and his obsession with Daisy. After dislodging himself from his poor roots, Gatsby remakes himself and mingles with the upper cluncool with the hopes of meeting Daisy. I think the way people want things that are unattainable is part of human nature. People is always greedy and ambitious about things they want.

I don't think that unattainable love is popular. People wants stable and trustful love. We dream to love and marry with popular person, but it's a just dream. We all have destiny to marry with someone. I think people want someone more because sometime we want to avoid our fates.

Unattainable love is an exciting story, especially for the woman, since the one that is loved is usually woman. In a sense, unattainable love is a type of tragedy because no matter what you do, you will not get the love back. And men have a natural tendency to more strive for things that are not meant for them, which also adds to why the topic is so popular.

Unattainable love is a common theme in the drama industry in my country. Especially since it depends heavily on our culture and our view on relationships. It has been a tradition to have arranged marriages so people don't usually get the chance to chose the person they want to marry. Basically it's like a blind date, but you don't get to pick if you want to date them or not. Unattainable love is not seen as a wrong or unfortunate thing in my culture. Many relationships are made between rich family teenagers and poor family teenagers but they never truly get to express their love because of the restrictions from their families. I think unattainable love is a popular theme because it gives a twist to the story, or something to hope for. If the couple gets together easily there is no drama and tension. However if there are challenges the characters have to face, there story becomes more intense and dramatic. I'm not a fan of dramas but I definitely see situations with unattainable love in real life.
